Pipe-like karst structure filled with descloizite- and vanadinite-rich muds that appear to have replaced a precursor Pb-Zn-rich pipe. The mine is located 26 miles North of Grootfontein. Workings are at least 680 meters deep. Owned by South West Africa Co., Ltd.

Owned by South West Africa Co., Ltd. The Abenab Mine operated as an open pit and underground mine from 1921 to 1947 by South West Africa Company primarily for the lead-zinc. It is possibly the largest known and highest-grade deposit of vanadate ore in the world. Initial production was 30 to 80 tonnes of high-grade vanadium ore, recovered by blasting and hand-sorting. A vanadium-lead mine owned by South West Africa Co., Ltd. Located about 20 miles North of Grootfontein and about 100 m SW of the Abenab Mine (Abenab pipe).

Agency Database name Acronym Record ID Notes; U.S. Bureau of Mines: Minerals Availability System: MAS: 7920000016 The report read that the Abenab mine was operating when vanadium prices were substantially lower than they are now, so only higher grade ore was processed. Therefore, the lower grade ore encountered during the mine development was probably either stockpiled for later treatment or considered waste as per the companyâ s information. Abenab opened in 1922 and closed in 1958.

Golden Deeps is looking to push the prospect back into production, completing the study alongside metallurgical and processing testwork in a bid to secure The Geology and Historical Importance of the Abenab V anadium Mine in the Otavi Mountainland (Namibia) The Abenab and Abenab West mines were known as the “world’s richest” and largest known deposits of base metal vanadate ore, producing a substantial amount of very high-grade concentrate. The historical Abenab Mine was a major open pit and underground vanadium and base metal mining operation in the Otavi Mountain Land.

The historical Abenab Mine and adjacent Christiana Mine were considered to be the world’s richest vanadium mines.

In its heyday, the mine reported ore production of approximately 1.8 million tonnes at 1.05% vanadium pentoxide for approximately 102,000 tonnes of concentrate grading 18% vanadium pentoxide, 13% zinc and 42% lead.
